Position Summary

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, Ambulatory Care, Oncology, and Fracture Clinic, the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementation and evaluating nursing care and practice activities as required in an outpatient oncology clinic.  Responsibilities will include monitoring of vital signs, administration of chemotherapeutic agents, and providing comprehensive education for patient and their family.  Provides holistic nursing care to meet the emotional, psychological, spiritual and physical needs of the oncology patient and their families.  Acts as a navigator to support the patient through the continuum of care in the oncology setting.  The incumbent must possess strong empathic communication skills, advanced knowledge and competence in the care and maintenance of Central Venous Access Devices (CVAD) as well as exceptional ability in the insertion of challenging peripheral vascular devices.  The successful candidate must have a broad knowledge basis on current treatments for oncology patients and adhere to standards of practice in the safe administration of these treatments.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Current B.C.L.S
• Oncology certification required or willing to obtain upon hire
• Current Chemotherapy certification required or willing to obtain upon hire (deSouza or equivalent oncology certification)
• Certification in I.V., Venipuncture & CVAD management

MANDATORY COMPETENCIES:

Technical:

• Demonstrated knowledge of CVADs, including access, care and management
• Demonstrated knowledge of therapeutic phlebotomy, transfusions
• Experience in patient education and health teaching including the ability to apply principles of adult learning
• Excellent attendance record
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, and time management skills
• Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge and experience using a variety of electronic health record and medication systems

Cognitive:

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of oncological disease processes, symptom management and abnormal clinical indicators
• Demonstrated commitment to quality patient care and experience in patient education
• Demonstrated commitment to continuing education

Preferred:

• Minimum of 1 year experience in Oncology considered an asset
• Minimum of 1 year current experience in Outpatient, critical care or related areas considered an asset
• Member of CNAO (Canadian Nurses Association in Oncology)
• Member of RNAO
• CNA (Canadian Nurses Association) Certification in Oncology
• Patient Navigation (CCO)
• Experience in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety initiatives

Primary Responsibilities also include: 

• Monitoring of patients during and post administration of chemotherapy and other infusions
• Establish a patient-centred therapeutic relationship supporting the needs of individuals throughout their care
• Health teaching for patients including symptom management and risk reduction utilizing therapeutic communication techniques and strategies
• Flexibility in work environment and daily assignments
• Collaboration with a variety of healthcare providers
